1)Karnataka’s Nandi Hills Ropeway Project Gains Momentum as Land Acquisition Process Begins:

A long-cherished dream of enjoying a ropeway ride over the scenic Nandi Hills is finally turning into reality, as the district administration has begun the process of acquiring land for the ₹93.4 crore project, according to the Times of India.

Officials in Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka, have issued a notice to acquire around four acres of land in Madaku Hosahalli village, close to the Kanive Basaveshwara Swamy temple at the base of the hills. This land will be used to build the lower terminal station and the path for the ropeway.

The planned base station will include parking for over 200 cars, 100 two-wheelers, and several buses, along with a waiting area big enough to hold more than 500 people.

According to the government notification, 281 square metres—about three guntas—have been marked for the terminal itself. An extra three acres and 32 guntas will be used for the ropeway route.

The district authorities have warned that no one should interfere with the land acquisition process. The notice clearly states that anyone causing problems for government staff, including survey teams, will face legal action.

Landowners have been told they cannot sell, lease, or transfer their land during this period. They have been given 60 days to raise objections with the Assistant Commissioner of Chikkaballapur subdivision if they wish to do so.

Chikkaballapur Deputy Commissioner PN Ravindra confirmed, “The process of acquiring land for the Nandi Hills ropeway project has started. We have already received clearance from the forest department, and work on the project will begin soon.”

Although the project was supposed to begin in 2022, it was delayed due to forest approvals and land concerns. Those issues have now been resolved, and the long-awaited ropeway is finally moving forward.

Bhoga Nandishvara Temple – A Hidden Gem Near Bengaluru

Bhoga Nandishvara temple (Kannada: ಭೋಗ ನಂದೀಶ್ವರ ದೇವಾಲಯ, also spelt “Bhoga Nandishwara” or “Bhoga Nandeeshvara”) is located at the foot of the Nandi Hills (or Nandidurga), 55km north of Bengaluru (Bangalore) in the state of Karnataka. Although rarely visited, it has been identified as one of the oldest temples in Karnataka, with its origins dating back to the early 9th century A.D.

The entrance to the large temple complex is from the north perimeter wall, there is plenty of roadside parking and a few roadside shops where you can pick up basic provisions. The large compound is surrounded by colonnades with a few things of interest to see here which I will cover at the end of this blog. The entrance to the main temple itself is through an unfinished gopuram.

It’s been a few years since I have visited Karnataka, but my initial feelings upon seeing the gateway brought memories of Hampi flooding back, which has to be one of the most memorable and special sites I have ever visited in India. It’s a timely reminder as well that I have unfinished business in that great deserted city of the Vijayanagara Empire, I need to plan a return visit soon !

What is today known as Bhoga Nandishvara Temple actually comprises of a pair of main shrines built side by side. The north shrine is dedicated to Bhoganandishwara, the south shrine to Arunachaleshwara, each consisting of a garbhagriha, sukanasi, and navaranga.

The carvings and architectural details on the exterior of the temples, seen as you walk around the inner compound, and simply wonderful. Here there are pilasters, turrets, and exquisitely pierced windows with friezes of elephants, yalis and lions.

The perforated decorative stone windows which contain figures are particularly fine, including a dancing Shiva on the south wall of the Arunachaleshwara shrine, and Durga standing on a buffalo head on the north wall of Bhoganandeshwara shrine.

As with the unfinished entrance gateway, there is much here that reminded me of Hampi. As it turns out, this entire temple complex was significantly altered and enlarged during the the Vijayanagara empire in the 16th century, with further subsequent modifications by the Gowdas of the Yelahanka dynasty.

Within the inner compound there are a number of smaller shrines, not all of them I have been successfully able to name. In north-west corner is the Shri Girijamba Shrine, and set against the inner western wall is a shrine of Parvati.

The Indian art historian George Mitchell has suggested that the early phases of temple construction here commenced during the 9th-10th century by the Nolamba rulers of Hemavati. This is backed up by inscriptions found refering to the temple construction for Shiva which have been attributed to the Nolamba dynasty ruler Nolambadiraja and the Rashtrakuta emperor Govinda II, and dated circa 806 A.D. Dating evidence is further backed up by the discovery of copper plates of the Bana rulers Jayateja and Dattiya, which have been dated to circa 810 A.D.

This temple clearly played a significant religious and spiritual role throughout the centuries. The temple has been under the patronage of successive notable South Indian dynasties; the Ganga Dynasty, the Chola dynasty, the Hoysala Empire and the Vijayanagara Empire – each of which have left their mark on the temple we now see today.

Moving to the interior of the main temple, the southern Arunachaleshwara shrine is thought to have been constructed by the Gangas of Talakad, the northern Bhoganandishwara shrine is attributed to the Chola dynasty.

Not too far away from Bhoga Nandishvara is the far more famous Veerabhadra Temple at Lepakshi, a fact which probably contributes to this temple being largely overlooked by visitors. This is a great shame as it can easily be reached as a half day excursion from Bengaluru, and is widely considered one of the most important examples of Dravidian temple architecture to be found in India.

STRR (NH-648) sections opened Mar 2024; STRR overview.

STRR road is known as Satellite Town Ring Road and the Peripheral Ring Road. It is a 288 km stretch that connects twelve satellite towns in the city.

It gets developed by the National Highway Authority at a big investment of Rs 17000 crores. It will connect 12 important towns around the city. It is an under-construction 4-6 lane expressway connecting 12 towns. The project connects eight state and 6 national highways, which ease traffic in the city. The project gets funded 60 percent by NHAI and 40 percent by the government.

The project is 24 3 km in Karnataka and 45 km in Tamil Nadu. Of the 288 km of the road, 136 km will be constructed at a price range of Rs 5,731 crore. The project will cover a total area of 1,019 sq km and link 331 villages. The main aim of this project is to offer a good bypass route to all the areas and reduce the traffic jams that occur every day. The corridor is for a 100 km/hr speed to boost freight movement and increase traffic handling capacity.Specifications

The specifications of the big project are as follows-

  • The total project cost of the STRR road is about Rs 17,000 crore, and the project length is 288 km, of which 243 km is in Karnataka state and 45 km is in Tamil Nadu.
  • According to the design, the Right of Way is 9 meters and follows the Hybrid Annuity Model.
  • The design will support 100 km/hr, and there will be 4 to 6 lanes on this road, and it is all set to ease the traffic in the city.

Currently, the building of STRR road is at a swift pace, far ahead of the estimated schedule. The project got approved in 2005 and did not see much progress. The construction gained speed after the Central government declared funding.

The STRR road will connect the twelve towns of

  • Tattekere
  • Dobbasapete
  • Devanahalli
  • Doddaballapura
  • Sarjapura
  • Sulibele
  • Sulibele
  • Hoskote
  • Kanakapura
  • Attibele
  • Magadi
  • Ramanagara

The road will offer another route for heavy-duty vehicles to pass the city, easing the congested areas. The project is in 3 parallel phases. It involves the repositioning of the NH-207 and the building of NH-948A. The road will also pass across the Bannerghatta National Park.

Louis Berger Group and KITKO prepared the detailed STRR road Project Report. The project’s purchase started in 2018 with 1009.8 hectares in Karnataka state and 340 hectares in Tamil Nadu. The project will see the completion of its initial phase by 2023. As a result, towns close to the city will be connected with Tamil Nadu’s Hosur region.

The first phase of the project will get completed by next year. Out of three packages on NH 648, work on two packages measuring 80 km is in progress and should get completed by 2023. The STRR road project aims to provide a fast bypass route to all the people and increase the speed of freight movement in the city. The road will pass through BNP’s eco-sensitive zone from 95.52 to 138.00 km, including an 8 km elevated highway through its core.

The Outer Ring Road cannot take the vehicular density, and the average density is double at junctions like Hebbal and KR Puram. All traffic experts suggest cities need as many ring roads as possible to ease traffic issues. The city is outwardly grown, and it needs more roads. The STRR will be a big welcome relief, and no construction is allowed within 40 meters of the state highway and 25 meters from the district highway. The state government plans to limit commercial and housing property construction all along highways. The government asked the local towns and panchayats not to permit such buildings.
